Folklore has historically served as a distillation of our attempts to understand the environment and human behavior. The complexity and intricacy of the natural world is boiled down to more palatable bites, often intended to teach or instruct. These stories connect us to each other and a desire to make sense of things. Similarly, the illustration found in children’s books acts as a kind of filter of the world around us in the service of storytelling.Through the veneer of illustration and folklore, the artists in this exhibit tell a story about the natural world now – of a climate in a state of tremendous change and yet still filled with wonder. Their works ask you to imagine and re-access your understanding of your relationship with nature as we perceive it.
